Winery Background

Angove Family Winemakers, established in 1886, is a pioneering family-owned winery in South Australia. The Angels Rise Vineyard, situated in the cool-climate region of Clarendon within McLaren Vale, is among their most esteemed sites. Certified organic and biodynamic, it features some of the oldest Nebbiolo vines in the region, producing wines that exemplify the unique terroir of McLaren Vale.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions

The 2022 vintage benefited from a warm growing season, allowing the Nebbiolo grapes to achieve optimal ripeness. The Angels Rise Vineyard's old vines, planted between the 1940s and 1990s, contributed to the wine's depth and complexity. The certified organic and biodynamic practices ensure that the vineyard's health and biodiversity are maintained, resulting in fruit that truly reflects its origins.

Winemaking

Grapes were handpicked from the Angels Rise Vineyard and fermented separately to preserve the distinct characteristics of Nebbiolo. The wine was basket-pressed to a single St Martin French oak hogshead, allowing the fruit and oak to integrate harmoniously while retaining the grape’s unique personality. The final wine was bottled without fining or filtration to maintain purity and expression.

Tasting Notes

• Appearance: Pale ruby with a hint of garnet.
  

• Aroma: Aromas of dried rose petals, ripe red cherries, and a delicate hint of tar, intertwined with subtle earthy notes.
  

• Palate: Elegant structure with high acidity and firm tannins. Flavours of sun-ripened raspberries and wild strawberries, complemented by truffle and forest floor nuances.
  

• Finish: Long, with lingering dried fruit, a whisper of tobacco leaf, and a gentle mineral edge.

This wine pairs beautifully with roasted meats, hearty stews, and mature cheeses. Its structure and complexity also make it an excellent companion to dishes featuring rich sauces or earthy flavours.
