Winery Background
Aphelion’s Welkin range is dedicated to small-batch, expressive wines made from distinctive parcels of fruit across South Australia. While Grenache is their flagship, the winery also champions rare and underappreciated varieties, giving them a refined, textural identity. Clairette — a southern French grape — is seldom seen in Australia, making this bottling both rare and exciting.

Region & Vintage
From the cool-climate slopes of the Adelaide Hills, the 2021 vintage was near-perfect, marked by a long growing season, cool nights, and a mild harvest. These conditions preserved high natural acidity and lifted aromatics, allowing Clairette to show both freshness and textural depth.

Winemaking
Hand-harvested fruit was whole-bunch pressed and fermented wild with minimal intervention. A portion underwent fermentation in seasoned French oak to add creaminess and weight, while the balance remained in stainless steel to retain freshness. Lees contact enhanced texture and complexity without obscuring the varietal purity.

Tasting Notes
Pale straw with green highlights. The nose offers aromas of white flowers, citrus blossom, quince, and hints of almond. The palate is crisp yet textural, with flavours of pear, lemon zest, stone fruit, and a savoury, nutty undertone. Lively acidity ensures balance, leading to a clean, mineral-driven finish.
