Winery Background
Schild Estate is a family-owned winery with deep roots in the Barossa Valley. The estate's history dates back to 1847 when the vineyard was planted by Ann Jacobs, just eleven years after the foundation of South Australia, making it one of the oldest in the world. The Schild family purchased the vineyard in 1984, continuing a legacy of winemaking excellence. The Ben Schild label is a tribute to Ben Schild, who began the family's long association with winemaking and viticulture. The estate is committed to producing wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the Barossa Valley terroir.
Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
The 2021 Shiraz is sourced from the Angus Brae Vineyard, located 4 kilometres north of Lyndoch in the Barossa Valley. This relatively young vineyard is managed to suit the soil profile and terroir, ensuring premium fruit is produced. The 2021 vintage experienced ideal growing conditions, with warm temperatures during the day and cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly and develop concentrated flavours. The alluvial clay-loam soils of the vineyard contribute to the wine's depth and structure.
Winemaking
Fermentation took place in small harvest lots with careful extraction of colour and tannin to preserve the fruit's integrity. The wine spent time in oak barrels to develop structure and spice notes while maintaining the plush fruit expression. The style is bold yet balanced, with ripe Shiraz fruit supported by a fine tannin frame.
