Winery Background
The Henschke family, custodians of some of Australia’s most iconic vineyards for over 150 years, has earned international acclaim for their uncompromising dedication to terroir-driven, expressive wines. Among their Legacy Collection, Marble Angel Cabernet Sauvignon is a proud reflection of the Barossa Valley’s rich history and the Henschke family’s mastery of single-varietal reds, celebrating the strength, elegance, and longevity of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
Sourced from carefully selected low-yielding vineyards in the Barossa Valley, the fruit for Marble Angel grows in ancient soils that impart depth and minerality to the wine. The 2020 vintage was exceptional: mild conditions, even ripening, and balanced rainfall resulted in Cabernet of outstanding flavour intensity, supple tannins, and exceptional natural acidity—an extraordinary year for collectors and enthusiasts.
Winemaking Process
Grapes were hand-harvested and destemmed, then fermented in small, open-top fermenters with gentle plunging to enhance colour, flavour, and tannin integration. Following fermentation, the wine matured for 18 months in fine-grained French oak hogsheads (a judicious proportion new) to achieve balance, complexity, and age-worthy structure.
Tasting Notes
Deep crimson with garnet hues. The bouquet opens with blackcurrant, cassis, and mulberry, layered with hints of cedar, tobacco leaf, bay leaf, dark chocolate, and graphite. The palate is bold yet refined, with dense black fruit framed by firm, powdery tannins and vibrant acidity. Subtle oak spice lingers beneath the fruit, adding depth and savoury elegance. The finish is long, structured, and finely balanced, promising decades of evolution in the cellar.
Food Pairing
A natural partner for grilled ribeye, slow-braised beef short ribs, lamb rack, or venison. Also pairs beautifully with aged cheddar, Manchego, or Pecorino.
Story Behind the Wine
The name Marble Angel pays homage to the historic Gnadenberg Church cemetery in the Barossa, where the Henschke family’s German Lutheran heritage is preserved. Among its monuments stands the “Marble Angel,” symbolizing strength and guardianship—an emblem mirrored in the wine’s power, purity, and enduring nature. Marble Angel 2021 captures the Barossa’s ability to produce world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, combining depth, grace, and extraordinary cellaring potential.
