Winery Background

The Henschke family, a cornerstone of Australian fine wine, has been crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines from the Barossa for over 150 years. Tappa Pass Shiraz forms part of their Legacy Collection, paying tribute to the unique subregions of the Barossa and their ability to produce Shiraz of profound depth and age-worthy structure.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions

Fruit is sourced from select vineyards in the Barossa’s Eden Valley and Barossa Valley subregions, with a focus on Tappa Pass. The high-altitude vineyards deliver vibrancy and fine tannins, while the valley floor contributes richness and dark fruit concentration. The 2022 vintage is already considered outstanding—ideal conditions with moderate temperatures and long ripening gave rise to Shiraz of exceptional colour, purity, and balance.

Winemaking Process

The grapes were hand-picked, destemmed, and fermented in open-top fermenters with gentle plunging and pump-overs to preserve fruit purity and integrate tannins. Post-fermentation, the wine was matured in French oak hogsheads (part new) for 18 months, creating harmony between fruit richness and oak complexity.

Tasting Notes

A striking deep crimson in the glass. The nose reveals plum, blackberry, and mulberry, layered with notes of anise, black pepper, and mocha, alongside subtle cedar and clove from oak maturation. The palate is powerful yet polished, showing dense black fruits framed by firm, velvety tannins and lively acidity. The finish is long, savoury, and complex, promising decades of graceful cellaring.

Food Pairing

Perfect with slow-cooked lamb shoulder, roasted game meats, venison pie, or prime rib. Complements aged hard cheeses like Comté or clothbound cheddar.

Story Behind the Wine

Tappa Pass Shiraz pays homage to the vineyards surrounding the Tappa Pass region of the Eden Valley, known for its high elevation and distinct expression of Shiraz. With its rich fruit core and structural finesse, the 2021 vintage captures the essence of Barossa Shiraz at its most refined, bridging power and elegance in a way that is uniquely Henschke.
