This Pinot Noir from Huia is a refined and expressive Marlborough red, shaped by a warm, low-yielding vintage. It brings together concentration, structure and balance, with layered fruit and subtle complexity developed through careful, small-batch winemaking.

Winery

Huia is a Marlborough-based producer known for organic practices and thoughtful, small-scale winemaking. Founded in 1994 and now led by Tom Pegler, the winery focuses on minimal intervention and wines that reflect both place and season.

Named after the native Huia bird, a revered Māori symbol of honour and connection, the winery’s philosophy centres on balance, respect and craftsmanship.

Vintage & Vineyard

The 2020 vintage was warm and sunny, with slightly lower yields due to challenging early conditions. This resulted in clean fruit with strong concentration and depth.

Fruit was sourced from four vineyards across the Central Wairau, Brancott and Omaka Valleys, contributing to both complexity and structure in the final wine.

Winemaking

• Hand harvested and destemmed before fermentation

• Fermented using a mix of wild and organic yeasts

• Pressed off skins after fermentation

• Matured for 10 months in a mix of neutral and 20% new French oak barrels

• Further aged in large neutral cuve for 18 months

This approach builds depth, texture and balance while allowing the fruit to remain the focus.
