Kalleske is a seventh-generation family-owned winery located in Greenock in the north-western Barossa Valley. The Kalleske family has been farming the estate since 1853, making it one of the region's longest-established winegrowing families. Today, Kalleske is recognised as the oldest certified organic and biodynamic vineyard, farm and winery in the Barossa Valley. Merchant Cabernet Sauvignon honours the Kalleske family's history of trading and commerce, while showcasing the depth and character of organically grown Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 Barossa Valley vintage experienced favourable growing conditions, with a warm, dry season balanced by timely rainfall and moderate temperatures. The absence of extreme heat events allowed Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to ripen evenly, developing excellent flavour concentration while retaining freshness and balance.

Winemaking Techniques

Merchant Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted from certified organic and biodynamic estate-grown fruit. Following harvest, the grapes were fermented in open-top fermenters with regular pump-overs to maximise colour, flavour and tannin extraction. The wine was then matured in a combination of seasoned French and American oak hogsheads, allowing the fruit and regional character to remain the focus while adding subtle complexity and structure.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep crimson red

Aroma: Intense blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum aromas layered with cedar, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate and subtle spice

Palate: Full-bodied and richly flavoured with concentrated black fruits, cassis and savoury complexity supported by fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity

Finish: Long, structured and persistent with lingering dark fruit, cedar and spice notes
