For over 150 years, the Henschke family has been at the forefront of Australian fine wine, crafting wines of integrity and distinction from their Eden Valley and Barossa vineyards. Keyneton Euphonium is a tribute to the family’s heritage in the village of Keyneton, where generations ago, the Henschke family brass band played. This wine continues that tradition of harmony, blending Shiraz with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc into a composition of depth and elegance.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions

The 2021 vintage is recognised as one of the finest in recent memory across South Australia. A cool, mild season with balanced rainfall allowed fruit to ripen slowly and evenly, producing grapes of remarkable purity, balance, and natural acidity. Sourced from low-yielding old-vine vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys, the fruit reflects the region’s ancient soils and ideal climate for age-worthy reds.

Winemaking Process

Each varietal parcel was hand-harvested and vinified separately in traditional open-top fermenters, with gentle plunging to extract colour, flavour, and fine tannins. After pressing, the wines matured for 18 months in a careful selection of French oak hogsheads and barriques (a mix of new and seasoned oak). The final blend balances the generosity of Barossa Shiraz with the structure and length of Cabernet Sauvignon, the plushness of Merlot, and the aromatic lift of Cabernet Franc.

Tasting Notes

Brilliant deep crimson with a youthful purple edge. The bouquet reveals blackberry, dark cherry, cassis, and mulberry, supported by savoury hints of bay leaf, dried herbs, cedar, and mocha spice. The palate is plush and layered—Shiraz delivering rich fruit depth, Cabernet providing backbone and length, and Merlot and Cabernet Franc contributing finesse. Fine, powdery tannins integrate seamlessly with French oak, leading to a long, harmonious, and elegant finish.

Food Pairing

Ideally paired with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, beef bourguignon, venison, or grilled ribeye steak. It also complements aged cheddar, Comté, or artisanal hard cheeses.

Story Behind the Wine

Like the euphonium in a brass ensemble, the supporting Bordeaux varieties enrich and elevate Shiraz in this blend, creating a wine greater than the sum of its parts. The magnum format (1.5L) offers an even slower, more graceful maturation, making this release a true collector’s item.
