Winery Background

Moppity Vineyards is a family-run estate owned by Jason and Alecia Brown, based in the cool, elevated Hilltops region of Southern NSW. Their single-block range celebrates individual vineyard sites and Block A5 is a high-altitude Shiraz site that shows intense varietal character and polish.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions

The 2022 growing season in the Hilltops delivered warm days with cool nights that produced concentrated flavour and balanced acidity. Fruit from Block A5 was low yielding and richly focused, reflecting the granite-capped, free-draining soils of the site.

Winemaking Process

Fruit was hand-harvested from Block A5, fermented parcel by parcel with gentle extraction to maintain purity, and matured in older oak to add structure without overpowering the fruit. Screwcap closure preserves freshness and complexity.

Tasting Notes

Plum and black cherry aromas dominate with hints of roasted nut, game and a touch of twiggy spice emerging as the wine opens. Fine-grained tannins provide structure and lift. The palate is medium-bodied yet generous, finishing with elegant, savoury persistence and refined texture. The wine earned 94 points from critic Campbell Mattinson for its blend of weight and finesse on the palate.

Food Pairing

This Shiraz performs beautifully with grilled red meats such as lamb or venison, pepper-crusted steaks or mushroom ragout. It also pairs well with rich tomato-based dishes or aged cheddar.

Story Behind the Wine

Block A5 is one of Moppity’s stand-out vineyard parcels and this Shiraz is a real expression of that site. Crafted with a light touch and aged simply, this wine shows how a single block can deliver clarity, intensity and elegance in equal measure.
