Winery Background

Moppity Vineyards is a family-run estate founded by Jason and Alecia Brown in 2002 in the cool, high-altitude Hilltops region of Southern NSW. The Block series highlights unique vineyard parcels and Block M4 is dedicated to single-site Shiraz from a standout section in Hilltops.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions

Grapes for the 2022 Block M4 Shiraz were grown on elevated Hilltops terrain with warm days and cool nights, ideal for concentrating flavours while retaining freshness. Soils are free-draining with granite influence, and low yields contributed to expressive, vibrant fruit.

Winemaking Process

Fruit from Block M4 was wild fermented over around 14 days including whole bunches and carefully pressed. Winemaker also added a small portion of Viognier to enhance aromatic lift. After primary fermentation the wine was aged in older French oak barrels for around nine months before being bottled unfiltered under screwcap to preserve freshness.

Tasting Notes

This is a medium-bodied Shiraz brimming with concentrated dark fruit such as blackberry and blueberry, followed by nuances of purple flowers, smoked meat, cracked pepper and mocha. A subtle cedary oak touch adds depth and the inclusion of Viognier lends a silky sheen. The palate offers supple, velvety tannins, juicy texture and a long, savoury finish marked by spice and finesse.

Food Pairing

Excellent with grilled venison, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, charred vegetables, or robust mushroom ragout. It also pairs well with smoked cheese or peppery tomato dishes.
