Product Description
Winery Background
Moppity Vineyards is a family-run estate established by Jason and Alecia Brown in 2002 in the cool, elevated Hilltops region of Southern New South Wales. The ‘Escalier’ label represents the winery’s pursuit of excellence, showcasing their top-tier Shiraz from select vineyard sites.
Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
The 2014 vintage in Hilltops was outstanding, beginning with a cool to moderate spring followed by a warm early summer that hastened ripening. A cool change in the final three weeks extended the ripening period, enhancing complexity and depth in the grapes.
Winemaking Process
This Shiraz was co-fermented with 2% Viognier to lift aromatic complexity. Around 35% whole bunches were included in fermentation after a three-day cold soak. The wine then matured for 14 months in new and seasoned French puncheons, allowing it to develop richness and structure.
Tasting Notes
The 2014 ‘Escalier’ offers intense aromas of redcurrants, plums and mulberries, layered with notes of Asian spice, graphite and dark chocolate. On the palate it is vibrant and silky, with a powerfully elegant finish that balances richness with finesse.
Food Pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with grilled lamb or beef, hearty venison stew or a charcuterie board. It also complements mature cheeses and rich meat dishes beautifully.
Story Behind the Wine
‘Escalier’ means ‘staircase’ in French, symbolising Moppity’s ongoing commitment to improvement and quality. This Shiraz embodies the pinnacle of their winemaking craft, delivering a wine of depth, power and elegance.
