Winery Background
Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards is a sixth-generation, family-owned winery in the heart of McLaren Vale, South Australia. Established in 1841, the estate has built its reputation on crafting premium, small-batch wines that showcase the region’s distinctive terroir. The HJ Reserve Shiraz is the flagship wine of the estate, named in honour of H.J. (Herbert John) Oliver, a pioneer of the family legacy.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
The fruit for the HJ Reserve is sourced exclusively from the oldest and best Shiraz blocks on the Taranga vineyard. The 2021 vintage in McLaren Vale was exceptional—mild conditions allowed slow ripening, resulting in fruit with outstanding flavour concentration, natural acidity, and balanced tannins.

Winemaking Process
Handpicked and carefully sorted, the grapes underwent small-batch fermentation with extended maceration to extract depth and texture. The wine was matured for 20 months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads to add complexity and fine tannin structure.

Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in colour, this Shiraz opens with aromas of dark plum, blackberry compote, and mocha, layered with subtle hints of spice and vanilla. The palate is rich and full-bodied, offering dense black fruit flavours with notes of chocolate and cedar. Silky tannins and well-integrated oak lead to a long, elegant finish.
