Winery Background
Penfolds Grange is Australia’s most celebrated fine wine, first conceived by Max Schubert in 1951 as an audacious experiment to create a long-lived, world-class red. Built on a philosophy of multi-regional sourcing and meticulous craftsmanship, Grange has since become a benchmark for Australian Shiraz, with certain vintages—like the 1971—achieving near-mythical status among collectors.
Vintage & Production
The 1971 vintage was exceptional, benefiting from a warm, dry growing season across South Australia. Crafted predominantly from Shiraz with a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, the fruit came from Penfolds’ finest vineyards in the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra. Fermented in traditional open fermenters and matured for around 18 months in new American oak hogsheads, it delivered the quintessential Grange style—concentrated, structured, and immensely age-worthy.
Tasting Notes
After more than five decades, the 1971 Grange displays a deep mahogany colour with brick-red rim. Aromas are complex and layered—dried fig, leather, tobacco leaf, cedar, dark chocolate, and exotic spice, underpinned by earthy, gamey notes. The palate is silky yet intense, revealing rich black fruit, savoury depth, integrated oak, and fine, persistent tannins. The finish is hauntingly long, echoing both fruit sweetness and aged elegance.
Cellaring Potential
The 1971 is widely regarded as one of the greatest Grange vintages ever made and can still hold in top condition if cellared perfectly. However, most bottles are now at peak maturity, offering a once-in-a-lifetime tasting experience.
Food Pairing
Pairs beautifully with premium aged beef, roast lamb, or game meats, but for many collectors, this is a wine to savor on its own, allowing every nuance to unfold.
Story Behind the Wine
Max Schubert’s vision was to make a wine that could rival the world’s best and age for half a century or more. The 1971 Grange is the embodiment of that dream—it won international acclaim early on, including Best Red Wine at the 1979 International Wine and Spirit Competition, and is still hailed as one of the finest wines Australia has ever produced.
