Product Description

Penfolds RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz 2024 is a bold yet refined expression of Barossa Valley Shiraz, created to showcase the region's extraordinary fruit through a distinctly modern lens. First released in 1997, RWT—short for Red Winemaking Trial—was developed as an alternative expression to Grange, favouring French oak over American oak to highlight purity, elegance and vineyard character.

Drawn exclusively from premium Barossa Valley vineyards, RWT captures the richness and generosity the region is famous for while presenting it with remarkable precision. Concentrated dark fruit, fine tannins and beautifully integrated French oak create a Shiraz that is powerful without excess, polished without losing its unmistakable Barossa identity. It is a wine that continues to earn international acclaim for its depth, balance and exceptional cellaring potential.

Winery Overview

Founded in 1844, Penfolds stands among Australia's most iconic wineries, producing wines that have shaped the country's fine wine reputation for more than 180 years. Alongside legendary labels such as Grange, St Henri and Bin 389, RWT has established itself as one of Penfolds' flagship Shiraz wines.

Unlike many Penfolds reds that rely on multi-regional blending, RWT is sourced exclusively from the Barossa Valley, allowing the region's distinctive character to take centre stage. Its French oak maturation further sets it apart, resulting in a style celebrated for its refinement, purity and longevity.

Region and Vintage Conditions
The Barossa Valley enjoyed favourable conditions throughout the 2024 growing season, producing fruit of exceptional concentration and balance. Warm days encouraged full flavour development, while cooler evenings helped preserve freshness and natural acidity. These conditions delivered Shiraz with impressive colour, generous fruit intensity and beautifully refined tannins, perfectly suited to the RWT style.

Source

Fruit is sourced exclusively from carefully selected Barossa Valley vineyards renowned for producing premium Shiraz. Each parcel is assessed individually before blending, ensuring the finished wine captures the richness, structure and unmistakable regional character that have become synonymous with Penfolds RWT.

Winemaking

Following fermentation, the wine is matured in French oak hogsheads, a defining feature of the RWT style. This approach enhances texture and complexity while complementing, rather than dominating, the fruit. Careful barrel selection and extended maturation allow the wine to develop depth, harmony and impressive ageing potential while preserving the vibrant character of Barossa Shiraz.
