Product Description
Pepper Tree's Alternate Series focuses on lesser-known international varieties that are particularly well suited to Australian growing conditions. The 2023 Barbera is sourced from the Wrattonbully vineyard and showcases the variety in a bright, lively style.
Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
The Wrattonbully vineyard sits within the Limestone Coast wine zone, where ancient beach ridges and dunes have weathered into the distinctive Terra Rossa clay loam soils prized for grape growing. The elevation of these ridges also provides cold air drainage, helping reduce frost risk during the growing season.
The 2023 growing season began relatively warm and dry after a cooler, wet spring. As the season progressed, cooler conditions slowed ripening, allowing flavours to develop gradually and consistently. The resulting fruit showed good balance and complexity, with the vintage described as a very strong one.
Winemaking
The Barbera grapes were picked at ripeness during the cool of the night and cold soaked for three days before fermentation. The wine was fermented in static fermenters with twice-daily pumpovers to aid tannin and fruit extraction. Once dry, it was pressed from the skins and matured in a combination of seasoned oak and stainless steel to preserve its fruit expression and vineyard character. After eight months, the wine was blended and prepared for bottling.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Bright and vibrant in colour.
Aroma: Cherry blossom and dried herb aromas provide a fragrant introduction.

Finish: Lively and refreshing, with dark cherry, herb and pepper notes carrying through the finish.
