Winery Overview

Dr McMahon wines are made in honour of Seville Estate’s founder, Dr Peter McMahon, who planted the first vines with his wife Margaret in 1972. Crafted from hand-selected bunches and a bold, expressive winemaking approach, these releases capture the character of their Upper Yarra site and are built to reward long-term cellaring.

Region & Vintage Conditions

The 2020 vintage mirrored the warm, high-yielding conditions, with strong winter and spring rainfall followed by a dry summer. Well-developed canopies protected the fruit, allowing a long ripening window and complex flavour development in the elevated, secluded Upper Yarra vineyards.

Handpicked fruit from Seville Estate’s Upper Yarra site, selected bunch-by-bunch in the vineyard for purity, ripeness, and whole-bunch suitability.

Winemaking

100% whole-bunch, wild primary fermentation and matured in two new 500L French oak barrels. Left on skins for 60 days, then returned to the barrel for 10–12 months’ maturation. Bottled unfined and unfiltered for maximum expression.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep, vibrant red with a youthful, concentrated core.
Aroma: Ripe blood plum, crème de cassis, blueberry pie, with layers of fennel seed, nutmeg, mint dark chocolate, and Christmas pudding spice.
Palate: Soft and supple with stewed strawberry, cream, and forest berries—blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, supported by warm baking spice.
Finish: Long, structured, and fresh, carried by dried-apricot acidity and firm, blocky tannins.
