Winery Background
Shaw & Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw, with the vision of producing benchmark wines from the Adelaide Hills. The winery is renowned for its focus on cool-climate varieties, and its Shiraz has become one of the region’s most highly regarded expressions of the grape.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
Fruit for the 2022 Shiraz was sourced from the Balhannah and Lenswood vineyards, both situated at high altitude in the Adelaide Hills. The vintage delivered mild weather, allowing for long, even ripening. The result was fruit with vibrant aromatics, excellent natural acidity, and fine tannin structure.

Winemaking Process
Grapes were hand-picked, sorted, and fermented in small batches with partial whole-bunch inclusion to build spice and complexity. Maturation took place in French oak puncheons and barriques, about one-third new, for 14 months. This gentle oak handling ensured elegance and balance.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and plum are layered with pepper, clove, and a touch of floral lift. The palate is medium-bodied yet powerful, showing dark fruits, savoury spice, and silky tannins. A long, focused finish carries hints of cocoa and mineral freshness.

Food Pairing
Pairs beautifully with roast duck, venison, grilled lamb, or mushroom-based dishes. Its elegance also makes it a superb match for fine charcuterie and aged cheeses.
