Founded in 1896, Te Mata Estate is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most celebrated wineries. Situated in Hawke’s Bay, the estate is renowned for producing wines of distinction and balance. Elston Chardonnay is regarded as one of New Zealand’s benchmark Chardonnays, crafted with precision and elegance.

Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
The 2023 vintage in Hawke’s Bay was exceptional, offering warm days and cool nights that delivered perfectly ripe fruit with freshness and concentration. Chardonnay from the estate’s Havelock Hills vineyards showed excellent intensity, natural acidity, and a refined mineral edge.

Winemaking Process
Hand-picked grapes were whole-bunch pressed and fermented in French oak barriques (around one-third new). Partial wild fermentation and maturation on lees added complexity, richness, and a fine creamy texture, while careful oak handling preserved purity of fruit and balance.

Tasting Notes
Bright pale gold in colour. Aromas of white peach, nectarine, and citrus are complemented by notes of roasted hazelnut, brioche, and flint. The palate is layered and elegant, offering stone fruit richness, mineral drive, and a long, refined finish with seamless oak integration.

Food Pairing
An ideal partner for roast chicken, seared scallops, lobster, creamy pasta, or soft-rind cheeses. Its balance of richness and freshness makes it a versatile match for both refined and hearty dishes.
