Winery Overview

Trinity Hill is an iconic New Zealand winery in the famed Gimblett Gravels sub-region of Hawke’s Bay. Established more than 30 years ago, it was founded with the spirit of Northern Rhône Syrah, using Hermitage cuttings to craft premium cool-climate red wines. Their philosophy is “quality rather than quantity” with controlled yields and vineyard-driven wines that reflect site character.

Hawke’s Bay in 2018 experienced warm days and cool nights—conditions that enabled Syrah to develop both richness and structure. The vintage demanded precise vineyard management to retain freshness and finesse.

The Homage Syrah is drawn from prime parcels within Gimblett Gravels vineyards planted to Syrah (and historically related to Rhône cuttings). These sites deliver concentration, minerality and varietal clarity.

Winemaking
The grapes were hand-picked and carefully fermented with a portion of whole-bunch inclusion. Maturation was carried out in French oak (with a reduced percentage of new oak compared to earlier vintages) to refine tannins and polish texture while retaining vibrancy.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep garnet with purple-tinged edge.
Aroma: Layered bouquet of blackberry, black cherry, violet, black pepper, leather and subtle earthiness.
Palate: Medium-full bodied with rich dark fruit, spicy pepper and savoury complexity. The tannins are fine-grained and the acidity supports ageing potential while the fruit remains vibrant.  Finish: Long, structured and elegant, with lingering dark berry and pepper notes.
