A short drive from Melbourne is all worth the time, especially when it lands you to this petite yet beautiful Sunbury wine region. Steep hills, deep valleys and amazing flora and fauna are what define it the best. One of the oldest wine regions of Victoria, over the years, it has earned an international reputation with its world-class wines. Read on to know more.

Brief History
Viticulture in the Sunbury wine region began during the 1860s with the establishment of Goona Warra by James Goodall Francis. However, in the 1900s, winemaking ceased in this magnificent winery. This event was followed by a period of a setback for Sunbury wine industry. In 1982, the industry re-emerged with the purchase of Goona Warra by John Barnier and family who brought back to life the estate vineyards and winery.

Things to do

  • Take out a day to meet the lovely alpine dingoes at The Dingo Discovery Sanctuary and Research Centre. The conservation park has over 35 of these incredible predators which the visitors can see upon appointment.

  • Known for a flourishing food scenario, the regional delicacies are a must-try for all visitors. Do not forget to visit the historic wineries and their cellar door. Goes without saying, the world-class wines cannot be left behind!

  • The Sunbury wine region is also home to the famous Organ Pipes National Park. The natural amphitheatre (A result of volcanic eruptions one million years ago) it features is majestic and a must-visit for tourists.

  • A visit to the Rupertswood Mansion or the haunting buildings of Sunbury Lunatic Asylum is like a journey back in time. Discover the region’s rich history as you walk down to mystic places!

A Walk Through the Vineyards
Climate: The volcanic plain is heavily influenced by the cooling effect of winds from the Macedon Ranges in the north and the sea in the south.
Soil: It’s covered by dark and fertile soil. The structure may vary from lower plains to the hillside.

Must-Try Wines
A cool-climate wine region, Sunbury is especially known for its light- to medium-bodied Shiraz wines. Another grape variety widely produced in the region is Chardonnay that shares great similarities with the ones produced in Geelong. Not widely harvested in the region, Sunbury Cabernet Franc is also popular amongst red wine lovers.
