The Swan Hill wine region is named after a town called Swan Hill, located on the south of the Murray River in Victoria, Australia. The wine region has one foot in Victoria and the other in New South Wales.

A Glimpse at the History

The first winery was established in the year 1930 by the Thompson family. The winery has produced some of the finest wines till date and continues to do so. The region is famous for water-based sports besides producing fruit-driven wines.

Lesser Known Facts

  • It is often confused with the Swan District and its sub-region, Swan Valley. The district is located in Western Australia.
  • Many wine companies source grapes from this region and the vinification process take elsewhere.

Terroir

The climate is hot and dry with cool nights and receives very less rainfall. Due to less rainfall, the vineyards are irrigated using water majorly from the Murray River. The area enjoys plenty of sunshine in the year making it perfect for the fruits to ripen. It has red-brown loamy sands with pH ranging from neutral to alkaline. Alluvial soil is also prominent in the region.

Wines

Some of the popular grape varieties are grown here – Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Semillon. The wines are fresh, smooth and full of fruit flavours. If you are fond of wines and want to add new bottles in your wine cabinet. You can taste these varieties from Swan Hill and its nearby regions in Australian Inland Wine Show. As the name suggests, the show showcases some of the best wines from inland regions. You can also plan a trip in March for the Swan Hill Region Food and Wine Festival. It will be worth your time.
