Chalkers Crossing – A New South Wales Winery Par Excellence

Chalkers Crossing winery has shot into prominence when its wine, the Chalkers Crossing CC2 Shiraz 2014 won five awards at the recently concluded KPMG Royal Sydney Wine Show 2016. People are interested in tasting this wine for which winning awards has been a continuous run ever since it was launched. In 2015, the same wine won the international acclaim at Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition. These awards have not just brought fame to the wine but also to the Chalkers Crossing Wines and the Hilltops region.

Chalkers Crossing has vineyards in the Hilltops and Tumbarumba wine regions. Hilltops is south of Young in the southern New South Wales region. The soil of the region is red loamy sand type which is suitable for growing Riesling, Chiraz, Semillon and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties of grapes. Mediterranean type of climate is and predictable rainfall are other contributing factors which allow grapes to grow for making of wine.

The practice of viticulture in Hilltops has a long history. The first known instance of growing grapes in this region dates back to late 1800s. However, it soon declined in prominence and for the next 100 years or so there was no such practice. Focus to growing grapes in the region again gained momentum in 1980s and the growth accelerated in the next 20 years.

Chalkers Crossing also has vineyards at Tumbarumba, another grape growing region which is known for its cool climes and grape varietals of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Chalkers Crossing has a modern winery at Young where it processes these grapes for wine making.
