Hilltops Region - Wine & Food Lover’s Delight

Beautifully encapsulating a countryside experience, Hilltops wine region is located in the Southern New South Wales zone. A three and a half hour drive away from Sydney, it’s all worth the time for someone who has a taste for excellent culinary. From bright summer fruits, that are popularly grown in the area around the Young township of Hilltops, to juicy wines and award-winning sausages, the region will surely give you a bagful of souvenirs. History

Once a land of gold mines, the Hilltops wine region eventually gave birth to a mixed culture of winegrowing, farming and grazing stock.The region became popular in 1800’s with the discovery of gold by British in the Young township. The gold attracted Italian, Dutch, Chinese, French & American populations.
The winemaking, however, was established late in the scenario in 1860’s by Nichole Jasprizza (Croatia native) and by the early 20th century, he expanded his vineyards. Modern winemaking methods were introduced in 1969 with the foundation of Barwang Vineyard that is presently owned by McWilliam’s wine brand.

Terroir

Located at an altitude of 450m, this cool climate region provides perfect conditions for growing wines, especially reds. The grapes enjoy an even and long ripening period. It witnesses rainfall in the growing season and in spring. During the summer and autumn season, irrigating those rich & deep soils becomes necessary.

Nested with lush yellow-green hills, the Hilltops wine region produces excellent Cabernet Sauvignon wines that are powerful and balanced, perfect for long ageing. Along with the reds, it’s also known for cultivating outstanding white wines. Hilltops’ Chardonnay showcase a lean & elegant structure which are great for oak treatment and age gracefully for 5 yrs. It is also known for powerful Semillon and early-ripening Verdelho wines.
