Ingleburne and Penny’s Hill: A Remarkable Journey of an Iconic Family Property

This simple quote aptly fits the way Ingleburne property has marked its presence in the Australian wine industry, especially in the vibrant winemaking history of Penny’s Hill Wines. Formerly known as ‘Gedney’, this iconic land was first settled by Thomas Overton and his family in 1846. The land was converted into a farming property by wine pioneer Thomas Goss and his family, who moved from Devonshire to South Australia in 1849.

At first, Thomas leased a small plot from Thomas Overton, subsequently purchasing the entire property on 9th August 1854. He renamed it ‘Ingleburne’ and constructed a two-storeyed family farmhouse in 1855, leaving behind a flourishing farm land for his successive generations for the next 144 years.

Around 1993, Tony Parkinson, the proprietor of Penny’s Hill purchased 37 acres of this farming land, named Malpas Road Vineyard, followed by the acquisition of more land under this historic lush farm in 1996. This piece of land was named Goss Corner. Owned and managed by Tony Parkinson, the Penny’s Hill wine estate produces full-bodied, flavoursome wines using fruits sourced from their in-house vineyards spread throughout this very family property.

In 1998, the original Ingleburne homestead property completely became a part of Penny’s Hill, when Keith Rowland (the great- great- grandson of Thomas Goss) sold the plot to Tony for converting it into cellars for their estate. In 2010, a wine label named after Thomas Goss was announced to celebrate the 200^th birth anniversary of Thomas Goss. These premium wines are sold at Penny’s Hill cellars.

Today, this historic land houses the Penny’s Hill cellar door offering picturesque surroundings and unique drinking experiences to its wine lovers and enthusiasts. In simple words, Ingleburne and Penny’s Hill have become synonymous with each other.
