Macedon Ranges: The Coldest Wine Region of Victoria

Lying in the Central Victoria, Macedon Ranges wine region is the coldest in the state. Brief History
Viticulture in the Macedon Ranges wine region began in 1860, however, didn’t gain popularity until the establishment of Virgin Hills vineyard by famous restaurateur and artist Tom Lazar in 1968. This was followed in by Granite Hills (1970) and Hanging Rock (1982), both names have set benchmarks in the production of age-worthy Riesling & Shiraz, and sparkling wines respectively.

A Walk Through the Vineyards
Climate: The days are warm followed by a great fall in temperature in the evenings. The vines enjoy a prolonged period of maturation, resulting in high acidity, perfect for the production of sparkling wines.
Soil: The soil composition of the region is dominated by sandstone and shale. Towards the south, patches of granite soil can be found.

Must-try Wines
Macedon Ranges wine region excels in the production of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Both varieties are used in the production of still as well as sparkling wines. Apart from the two, Macedon is also famous for its aromatic Cab Sav and Rhône-style spicy Shiraz.
