Perricoota Region - Discovering the Regional Charms

Situated on the banks of Murray River, Perricoota is a compact yet famous wine producing region. It shares its boundaries with the world-renowned Riverina wine region, together forming a part of the Big Rivers zone along with Murray Darling, Perricoota and Swan Hills. Housing beautiful historic sites, it also offers a number of adventure activities to the visitors. In recent years, it has gained popularity for producing exceptional quality table wines.
A Brief History
Established in the 1850s, Perricoota region was named after a historic pastoral site - Perricoota station. In 1911, this site was purchased by Watson brothers and is still owned and operated by the family. However, viticulture came into the scene much later - in 1995, with the establishment of first vineyards in the region. As winemaking flourished, the region received GI appellations in the year 1999.

- The region is worth a visit during November as the month brings with it the famous Perricoota Pop and Pour Festival. It takes place on the last Saturday of the month, showcasing regional wines and gastronomical delights.
- The river town of Echuca and Moama are one of the major tourist attractions renowned for heritage sites and historic paddle steamers.
- The region also offers a wide range of adventure activities like canoeing, bushwalking, kayaking, camping, boating and fishing. One may also spend a day on the houseboat while appreciating the natural beauty and the regional wines.

The Soil
Owing to the proximity to Murray River, the vineyards in Perricoota enjoy alluvial soils. The region features reddish-brown loamy soil, for which Australia is especially known.
Must-Try Wines
Although a recently established wine region, Perricoota has earned a reputation in the industry with its amazing red and white table wines. From citrus-flavoured Semillon and the finely-balanced Chardonnay to fruit-driven Cab Sav and Shiraz, the region flaunts a wide wine portfolio. A few winemakers have also started producing fortified wines from Malbec, Mourvedre and Grenache varieties.
