The Story of Taylors Wines

The story of Taylors Wines began with the vision of Bill Taylor Snr and his sons, John and Bill. All three Taylors were wine merchants from Sydney and extremely passionate about the craft of winemaking, especially regarding the much - appreciated French clarets like Chateau Mouton Rothschild from the Bordeaux region. Their passion and dedication for the craft inspired them to create their own magnificent wines.

Taylors began searching for a piece of land where they could establish their vineyard. After a long search, they finally found an area by the Wakefield River in the Clare Valley region covering 178 hectares which was perfect for setting up their vineyard. The Terra Rossa soils of the region proved adequate for the growth and yield of optimum premium - quality fruit. The cool nights and warm days of Clare Valley are also an essential factor in the growth of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes planted here.

Taylors swiftly gained popularity and their endeavour soon received critical acclaim from renowned professionals. Their first ever vintage in 1973 won the Montgomery Trophy for best red wine in the Royal Adelaide Wine Show. This exceptional wine went on to receive various prestigious awards in all wine shows it entered after that.

Taylors decided to settle in the Clare Valley region because they were convinced that the Terra Rossa soils of the area would prove fruitful for the grapes. This was the result of a surprise discovery that they made during the excavation of the dam in the vineyard. They found the fossilized remains of tiny seahorses in the limestone bedrock of the dam. This ensured that this region had once been the bed of an inland sea. As a consequence, the seahorse was adopted as the symbol for the winery. Today, the three seahorses of Taylors Wines pay tribute to the three generations of expert winemaking that the winery has provided to the world.

Taylors Wines has deep roots in the Australian winemaking industry as they have been in the business for about four decades and three generations. For Taylors, creating great wines is all about family, because that is what defines their approach to the craft. The driving force behind the production of these marvellous wines is focus on the future and the ability to craft wines that the next generation of winemakers can be proud of.

The winemaking team pays special attention to preserving and enhancing the quality and taste of the fruit that is grown in their vineyards. They aim to achieve sophistication, style, richness, balance and finesse in each and every bottle of their wines. Taylors Wines works with the philosophy that the best of wines are created with utter dedication and utmost care. Their mantra is to always ‘respect the fruit’.
