The Ten Commandments of Wine Drinking
April 20, 2018
If you are reading this, we know you love wines just as we do. We certainly are not leaving any chance to make you great wine drinkers too. So without further ado, here are the ten commandments of wine drinking you ought not to miss, especially for if you are just beginning to sip on these marvellous exquisites.
1. Honour thy wine - be it red, white, or rose
Do appreciate the maker, the region, and the vintage of the wine. By doing so, you're actually activating your tasting hormones for a clear judgement of the wine.
2. Expand the palate
Have faith in your taste buds. No one or Nothing better than your taste buds can tell if you like a wine or not. Keep expanding the palate through wine drinking. The more you expand, the more advanced knowledge you'll have about wine tasting.
3. Wine never stops changing
The wine starts evolving from the moment it is ready for packaging. Its aroma, colour and flavours will change slowly when cellared carefully. However, it also ages quickly when you open it.
4. Not all wines are created equal
Even the new vintage of a similar series wine, crafted with same winemaking technique, might differ in taste. Also, don’t be judgemental with just two sips of a wine. Some wines can take some time to liven up.
5. Share thy wine
Do share the great wine bottles with those who enjoy and appreciate wines just as you do. Sharing an elegant wine with someone special doubles up the enjoyment of wine drinking.
6. Respect thy neighbour's taste
Every individual has varied preferences, so don’t force the one sitting next to you to taste your most-loved wine. If your guests don’t like it as much as you do, you may end up making the situation a bit weird for all.
7. Thou shall not use a decanter for all wines
Decanter is used for hard-bodied wines, especially the ones with a very thick texture. So, if you use it for a medium or light-bodied wine, you’ll actually be killing the delicate aromas meant for enhancing the bouquet.
8. Price and quality don't go parallel for wines
That’s true! Even the wines with smaller price tags have won trophies and gold medals for their brilliant tastes. Scroll through the Just Wines’ ranges of wines and apply appropriate filters to try some fairly priced wines that have been highly reviewed. You’ll be amazed at how good a low-priced wine from a not-so-renowned winery can taste. After all, the wine world is full of surprises!
9. Enjoy young wines, savour middle-aged wines, and honour the very old wines
Some wines are meant for immediate consumption after opening. Enjoy these young wines with their best food combinations with friends and family. Give some time to middle-aged wines. Sniff the aromas, swirl the glass to enhance the taste and let the wine dance over the palate. This is how you can enjoy middle-aged wine in the best way. As far as old wines are concerned, they’re the timeless classics. These very old wines should be honoured for the patience, time and winemaking skills involved to be enjoyed on the very special occasions for wine drinking.
10. Respect your limits
Trust this one! You'll regret if you won't. On a safer note, check the alcohol content in the wine before you go for a second glass.
Cheers!
