Wynns Coonawarra Estate Riesling - The Whites

The humble beginnings of Wynns Coonawarra Estate can be traced back to 1861 when John Riddoch, also called “the Squire of Penola” moved to the Coonawarra wine region in search of ideal soils to cultivate. In 1880, John had already acquired a 700 square kilometre property with over 160,000 sheep roaming on top of its soils. The property which bounds some 800 hectares of rich terra Rossa soil was gradually planted with tens of thousands of quality grapevines by the late 1890s.

In 1891, Chateau Comaum, the iconic triple-gabled winery and its surrounding vineyards were established. In spite of the extraordinary potential and capacity of the winery, it failed to achieve initial expectations primarily because of its remoteness from the major markets and the unstable economic conditions that hit Australia at that time. It was until 1951 when Samuel Wynn and Co. stepped up to purchase the winery with the resolve to take good care and develop its potential, and to put Coonawarra once again on the list of the largest and finest wine regions in Australia.

For over one hundred years of preserving the rich winemaking heritage from the Riddoch's to the Wynns, the winery has become the largest single vineyard holder and oldest established vineyard blocks in the Coonawarra district. Today, the Estate is considered the pioneer in winemaking in the modern-day Coonawarra wine region.

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Chardonnay first stepped on the limelight of the most prestigious wines in 1981. This wine displays a simple bright pale straw colour with light shades of lemon. Juicy pear, white nectarine and ripe grapefruit with subtle characters of nougat and cashew nuts complete the fragrant bouquet.

The palate embodies classic Coonawarra characters with luscious stone fruit and juicy pear characters. A hint of crisp grapefruit and green apple combined with notes of creamy cashew create a perfectly balanced palate. Supple French oak tannins and delicate sweet spice add to the complexity of its structure.

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Riesling is a regular favourite since 1962 because of its unparalleled consistency and symbolic representations of the varietal. Citrus and honeysuckle characters build the straightforward nose of this wine. Lemon curd, lime and cumquat dominate the citrusy palate. Fine sherbet acidity and floral spices add a touch of elegance to the wine’s innate fruity flavours. The finish is bright, refreshing and clean.
