With the first vines planted in 1860, Goulburn Valley is known for the oldest and largest plantings of Marsanne in the world. A part of the Central Victorian zone, the region comprises two notable wineries - the historic Tahbilk winery and the Mitchelton winery. Where Tahbilk winery is known for producing wines from vines planted in the mid 19th century, Mitchelton has established a name for Rhone and Victorian Riesling wine varieties since its establishment in 1969.

Goulburn Valley gets a growing season rainfall of 250 mm but the region is also blessed with abundant water through lakes. The distinctly warm climate with substantial diurnal temperature ranges and loose textured sandy, gravelly soils of Goulburn Valley, helps the region produce wines rich in colour and flavour.
