The Southern Fleurieu wine region got its name from the Fleurieu peninsula where it is situated. A South Australian region, it received appellation as an AGI (Australian Geographical Indication) in 2001. It is one of the five wine regions in the Fleurieu zone.

With 50 wine growers as of the year 2014, the most common grape planting in Southern Fleurieu is Shiraz at 24.7%, which is followed by Chardonnay at 18%. Cabernet Sauvignon follows closely behind at 15.3%, while Sauvignon Blanc accounts for 14.1% plantings. The maritime influences from the west and south result in a climate which is comparable to the dry, hot summers and wet, cool winters of the Mediterranean.
