Upper Hunter Valley

Upper Hunter Valley subregion is located on the higher slopes of Hunter Valley covering its northern and western parts. The first vines of the Upper Hunter region were planted in 1860 by a German settler Carl Brecht. The region receives an annual rainfall of 620 mm, majority of which falls during the late summer and early autumn. This makes irrigation a necessity during the early growing season of spring and summer. Since the region is based inland, it receives less maritime influence from cooling sea breezes, thereby making summers very hot. The region mostly grows white wine grape varieties.
