Located in the south east of South Australia, Padthaway wine region extends from Naracoorte in a northwesterly direction along the Riddoch Highway passing, through Padthaway town, ceasing when Riddoch Highway turns north towards Bordertown. The region received appellation as an AGI in 1999. Padthaway is home to several large commercial vineyards, the oldest being established in 1964 by Seppelts, with Lindeman's, Hardys and Wynns vineyards also setting up their bases in the 1960s.
The entire wine region is about 62 kilometres long and 8 kilometres wide, comprising over 4,000 hectares of vineyards. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir wines are the major wines produced in the region. Padthaway wines are produced in a maritime climate with over a terra rossa soil - a soil type consisting a brown sandy loam over red-brown clay over limestone.
