Robe is an emerging wine region that comes under South Australia’s Limestone Coast zone. The region is located on a rugged coastal landscape nestled between lakes and the Southern Ocean, and situated between Robe and Beachport townships. The area received its geographical indication (GI) as a wine region in 2006.
The region's climatic conditions are majorly influenced by the Southern Ocean to its west and lakes in the east. Robe experiences a cool maritime climate with cold and wet winters and cool evening breezes, perfect for slow and gentle ripening. Robe has a variety of soil types. On the limestone ridges, there are terra rossa and sandy loam soils, the coastal dunes have calcareous sand and the coastal plains have rendzina soil type. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz are the top grape varieties performing well in Robe’s climatic conditions and environment. The vineyards at Robe mostly grow red wine varieties, covering as much as 74% of the viticulture land as compared to 26% for white wine varieties.
