Lower Murray wine zone is located in South Australia, covering the southern portion of the state. Lower Murray derives its name from River Murray, the second largest river in Australia. Riverland wine region, the largest wine-producing region of South Australia, falls within the Lower Murray zone. The zone is bounded by Far North wine zone to its north, the Mount Lofty Ranges, Barossa and Fleurieu zones to its west and Limestone Coast wine zone to its south. The term ‘Lower Murray’ got registered as an Australian Geographical Indication on 7 December 1996.
