Northern Slopes is a large Australian wine zone covering the northern part of New South Wales. The area covers a large part of the inland slopes of the Great Dividing Range. New England Australia, one of the wine regions in the zone, received its geographical indication in 2008. The most popular wine grape variety grown in the Northern Slopes zone is Shiraz, followed by Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In addition to these, some Northern Slope wineries also have Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc and a lesser-known grape variety, Durif, to their portfolios. Some Italian grape varieties like Barbera and Sangiovese have also adapted to the hot and dry climate of the region.
