Located on the northwestern outskirts of Melbourne in Victoria, Sunbury is one of the state’s oldest wine regions. The wines produced here are fruit-driven with fine tannins. The climate of the region is rather temperate, with Macedon Ranges providing cooling influence from the north and the sea from the south. The soils are not very fertile unless for the old alluvial river terraces. As for grape varieties, Cabernet Franc, from the cool Loire Valley in France, is well-suited here. Cabernet Sauvignon is more popular in the region though, with Chardonnay and Shiraz being other significant varieties grown in the region.
