Recognised as the birthplace of the Great Southern, Mount Barker has consistently produced award-winning Riesling and Shiraz wines, which dominate the subregion as well. The continental climate conditions over here offer winter-spring rainfalls, diurnal temperature fluctuations, and average ripening period sunshine hours identical to those of Bordeaux. The subregion is situated in the middle of the Great Southern, enriched with marri soils and lateritic gravelly and sandy loams coming directly from granite rock protrusions. The climate and soil together are best suited to Riesling, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties.
