Pemberton wine region is swiftly gaining a reputation for its wine and gourmet produce. Planted experimentally in 1977, the region initiated commercial wine production in 1982. Popularly known as 'karri tree country', Pemberton is cooler than the neighbouring Manjimup, having fewer sunshine hours, more growing season rainfall and greater relative humidity.
Pemberton region has two major soil types. First is the moderately fertile, lateritic gravelly sands and gravelly loams overlying medium clay found on many of the higher slopes. Second is a deep red fertile soil, karri loam. Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir wine grape varieties are mostly used for producing Pemberton wines.
