The Southern New South Wales wine zone includes four wine regions - Canberra District, Gundagai, Hilltops and Tumbarumba. Located in and around the city of Canberra, the Canberra District wine region shares a similar climate with Hilltops and Orange. The region is known for its Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Shiraz and Viognier grape varieties. The Gundagai wine region produces Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wine styles and is home to the famous Australian icon, the Dog on a Tucker Box. Tumbarumba is the coolest wine region in New South Wales, located in the foothills of the Australian Alps. The area majors in white wine and cool climate varietals. Hilltops wine region shares a similar climate with the Orange region of the Central Ranges.

Hilltops Shiraz wines are noted for their Old-World Syrah-like black pepper flavours.
