Australian wines with excellence and spice is what defines Canberra District at a glance. The region is widely known for producing some of Australia's best cool climate Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Riesling and Chardonnay. Canberra's one-of-its-kind extreme climatic conditions attracted Dr Edgar Riek who then planted the region's first modern vineyards in 1971. The region's summer days are warm and dry with cold nights, while autumn has cool temperatures with rains at harvest. As far as soils are concerned, the region has hard red duplex soils along with shallow clay loam as topsoil. Other than Riesling and Shiraz, the top varieties grown in Canberra District, the region's alternative varietals like Grüner Veltliner, Tempranillo, Gamay and Sangiovese are also quite popular.
