Blessed with vineyards located at an altitude of 300 to 800 metres, Tumbarumba is the coolest wine region of Southern New South Wales wine zone. The first vines in the region were laid down in 1982. The current number of vineyards now stands at 25. The colder climate of the region complements Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varietals, both of which are considered great for making sparkling wines.
Despite the growing season rainfall of 375 mm and low temperatures, Tumbarumba climate provides bright sunshine for hours and a late growing season. Featuring typical high mountain features like gritty and granular texture, the Tumbarumba soils have been derived from decomposed granite and basalt. The subsequent quality of Tumbarumba sparkling wines is so fine that these are often compared with great champagnes from France.
