Western Plains got its geographical indication as an Australian wine zone in May 1996. Located in New South Wales, the region has the Central Ranges and Northern Slopes zones to its east, South Australia in the west, and Queensland in the north. Overall, this zone covers more than one-third area of the state, comprising the vast dry north-western interior of NSW.
Most of the Western Plain wineries are congregated around Dubbo and the eastern side of the zone. A growing number of vignerons are active within the zone. Shiraz and Chardonnay are the mainstay wine grape varieties grown in this zone.
