This wine region is located to the west of Melbourne in the state of Victoria. Wine production in the Grampians can be traced back to the 1860s, with the region being home to some of the oldest grapevines in the world. The climate is Mediterranean and the Southern Ocean provides a cooling maritime influence. Grampians is a cool climate grape-growing region by Aussie standards. The soil can be broadly divided into two - acidic, grey/grey-brown loam soils and a hard yellow soil. Neither of these two soil types is particularly fertile. Grampians is mostly known as a red wine producing region, with Shiraz being its best performing variety.
