This year, Western Australia has emerged as the most successful winemaking region in Australia. Winning awards at 2016’s major national wine shows and competitions, the latest feather in WA’s hat has emerged in the form of a Margaret River winery winning the award for the ‘Most Sought-After Wine’ on Thursday, 20th October.

The reputed Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy went to the 2014 Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon at the Melbourne Wine Show.

Over the years, this award has been received by many iconic Australian red wines, including the exquisite Penfolds Grange. The Deep Woods Cabernet is on a roll, also winning the Max Schubert trophy for Top Red at the Adelaide Wine Show held earlier this year. It has become the fifth Western Australian wine to be awarded this trophy, the last one being a Harvey River Bridge Estate varietal in the year 2010.

Peter Fogarty, owner at Deep Woods, was obviously delighted and expressed his willingness to produce the best wines across Australia. It has always been his personal goal to craft the best Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines of the Margaret River region. His dream has finally been fulfilled, first receiving the James Halliday award in 2014 for ‘Australia’s Best Chardonnay’ and now the Jimmy Watson award.

Other Margaret River producers to win trophies at the Melbourne Wine Show were the 2016 Stella Bella Sauvignon Blanc, 2016 Flametree Pinot Rose and 2014 Snake + Herring Corduroy Chardonnay.
