Astrolabe Wines is a family-owned and -operated business, established by Simon Waghorn and his wife Jane in 1996. The winery was named after a ship L’Astrolabe that was used to explore the Marlborough coast in 1827 by French explorer Dumont d’Urville. The name also stands for “star taker”—a navigational device used to ascertain latitude by the position of stars. The Founder Simon, having 36 years of winemaking experience, intends to capture the purity and intensity of fruit flavours as offered by the Marlborough terroir. The grapes are sourced from carefully chosen sites and wines are sustainably crafted adhering to rules under the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand programme.
