As previously called the ‘Sparkling Burgundies’ of Australia, sparkling red wines have long been an important part of the industry. However, the name ‘Sparkling Burgundies’ was outlawed by EU and thus, is no longer used to address sparkling reds. The trend began in the late 19th century, when winemakers in Great Western of Victoria (A region already reputed for sparkling wines) decided to craft méthode champenoise (So called, as it’s used in the production of Champagne) sparkling wines from the rich and ripe Shiraz grapes. This method involves the wine to undergo a secondary fermentation in the bottle. Production ofsparkling red wines was a breakthrough in the industry that was predominantly dedicated to production of sparkling whites wines. As it flourished, other major Australian wine regions like the Hunter, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Barossa also started producing these.
At present, sparkling red wines from Australia have gained a worldwide popularity. Shiraz is one of the most-widely used grape variety in the production of these iconic bubblies. It is also used to make sweet sparkling red wines which, upon ageing, may develop complex characteristics. Flaunting an enticing mousse or delicate beads in a glass, these bubblies develop a rich, creamy texture (As a result of ageing on lees). Other varieties like Merlot, Durif, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are also used in the production of these beauties.
