Pretty Good

: My aim with Plexus is to express the wide spectrum of red fruit flavours from Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre and also provide a structure with a seamless balance and long finish. Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques are employed with Plexus, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth, but also have a medium-term cellaring potential for 8-10 years. Fermentation with submerged cap and small open stainless steel fermenters. 100% barrel maturated for 14 months, with just 8% new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300-litre barrels); with the balance 3-6-year-old barrels. Some Shiraz finished fermentation in new French oak. Vibrant purple-red. Attractive red and black fruit with savoury notes. Generous with good intensity of blackberry fruit and Christmas cake character. Appealing texture with soft tannin backbone.

John Duval’s mastery in winemaking is apparent in the elegance of the wines in his range. The former Penfold’s winemaker makes wines that are immediately drinkable or even better with some rest in your cellar. The Plexus is a Rhone blend, one that makes Shiraz the star with it making up 52% of the blend, Grenache 32% and the rest Mourvedre. All sourced from around the Barossa Valley. There is a matching pair, a white blend of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier which I have also found to be a fragrant treat. Expect the Plexus red to have a pretty floral lilt, raspberry and black plum fruit, liquorice with some spicy cinnamon notes coming from 15 months in mostly seasoned oak. Supple, smooth tannins support the fuller body and the detailed length last long in the month. It is a mouthful of ripe lushness that will go anywhere, with anything and will impress. It might just be hard to share.
