Western Victoria's geography covers flat grasslands and granite escarpment. Warm summers in the zone allows optimal ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Winters are normally cold. Affected by El Nino and La Nina ocean currents, the area receives low annual rainfall, making irrigation a necessity. The far southwest of the west, on the other hand, experiences a maritime climate. The zone comprises three wine regions: Grampians, Henty and Pyrenees. Grampians is a cooler climate red wine region known for its juicy Shiraz and Cabernet fruit with distinctive eucalyptus and spice. Generally cooler than Grampians, Henty pioneers in white wines. Pyrenees wine region is best known for its distinctive flinty dryness which is found under its famous Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other tropical fruits.
