The Massif Shiraz was produced from grapes grown in several vineyards in the Grampians region of Western Victoria close to the foothills of Mount William. The vineyards ripen at different times due to their specific sites and differing micro climates. Since 2005 we have always used fruit from our own vineyard in varying amounts in the Massif Shiraz, however in 2012 due to the lower yields this wine contains less of our own fruit than in previous years. Fermentation was done in temperature controlled stainless steel open fermenters being regularly plunged gently by hand. The pressing was done using a hand operated basket press ensuring that the tannins are firm but not too aggressive. A portion of the wine was matured for 6 months with American and French oak prior to re-blending and bottling.
The Massif has a bright ruby red colour with a deep hue. The nose has plenty of spicy fruit jam aromas with a pepper note and well balanced oak. The palate exhibits Shiraz fruitiness, ripe plum with spice and is medium to full in body finishing medium dry with nice tannin. Sealed with Stelvin capsules this wine will retain its freshness and also benefit from decanting and patient breathing before drinking during the next period of maturation.
